Hong Kong Transit

The hills of Hong Kong are staring back at me through a haze. 80 degree heat and only a thin outline of the mountains makes remaining in the airport more attractive—I watch freighters and fishing vessels glide into harbor from a soft red fuzzy sofa.

Hong Kong airport is one of the most comfortable places you could hope for in a long layover. Having been through a number of Asia’s airports, HK is my favorite for the simplest of reasons:

  • Free wireless.
  • Clear layout.
  • Vast swathes of glass windows and skylights = sunlight and panoramas.
  • An abundance and variety of comfortable seating: long couches, chaise lounges, cozy armchairs.

I recommend it. Really, the only thing it’s lacking is a convenient electrical outlet for the laptop—I always have to ferret out the few that exist.

After 13+ hours on a direct long-haul flight, another 12 in the spaciousness of Hong Kong is a welcome relief to stretch, work, sleep before hitting the tumult of Kathmandu.
