The streets of Kathmandu are entirely empty at 11pm when I arrive, and you might think it a peaceful town. In the morning, the mayhem returns–horns beeping and blaring, bells ringing, motorcycles revving, pressure cookers hissing, hawkers calling out, children chattering, generators humming.
Blue skies through the haze, hot spring days, and traffic jams. Yale University just ranked Kathmandu the 2nd most polluted city in the world. Sadly, it’s no surprise to anyone who has spent even a few days here in recent years. I minimize my time in the city and spend it seeing friends and catching up on our non-profit programs.
